This January, we’re excited to welcome longtime board member Cort Macbeth Smith, of Smith Estates and Trust, LLC, as our new Board Chair. Cort first connected with Community Living in 2012, through the St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals program. What began as a networking opportunity quickly became something more meaningful.
“As I came to learn more about the people and families served, and work more closely with the staff, I gained a deeper understanding of everything Community Living does for our larger community,” Cort shared.
As an estate planning attorney, Cort sees firsthand how critical strong supports are for individuals with disabilities and their families. “Community Living is a unique, robust organization that offers support and opportunities. People in our area who need these resources are extremely lucky to have it, and I am honored to be a small part of the Community Living mission.”
One area that stands out to Cort is the focus of meeting the needs for inclusion in St. Charles County. “The staff are so plugged into what the needs are in our area that it’s astounding. The Young Adult Program and the opportunities this service provides for people with disabilities is a game changer in making our community more inclusive for everyone.”
For Cort, the most rewarding part of serving on the board is the people. “I love interacting with and brainstorming with people who genuinely care about the mission and the work,” he shared. “My family chooses to support Community Living because every person deserves the chance at living a fulfilling and meaningful life.”
As Board Chair, Cort sees the board’s role as supporting the staff, providing thoughtful oversight, and helping invite others into the mission. “The great thing about Community Living is there are many ways to get involved! Come to a Community Living event – we’re known as a fun organization for very good reasons. Come find out for yourself.”
We’re grateful for Cort’s leadership and look forward to the continued impact he will make in 2026!
