Jamalh and Connor stand near swings at the park. Jamalh holds a sign that says thank you for your support.

When Connor and Jamalh first met in elementary school, it didn’t take long for them to become best friends. They’ve been nearly inseparable ever since. They laugh together, get into a bit of mischief at school, and light up when they see each other at SOAR Teen Club. Connor and Jamalh are both participants in Community Living’s SOAR (Social Opportunities and Recreation) Program, which offers children and teens with disabilities the chance to build independence, learn new skills, and most importantly, have fun with friends.

“Connor loves seeing Jamalh,” said Connor’s mom, Michelle. “If he’s having a hard time getting moving in the morning, all I have to do is remind him that J will be at Teen Club. Their friendship means everything to us.” From swimming, swinging and playing basketball to lunch outings at Red Robin, Connor and Jamalh enjoy the simple joys of childhood… something every child deserves. For Jamalh’s mom, Jenny, the SOAR Program provides peace of mind and a space where her son can be himself. “At SOAR, he’s the norm, not the exception. It’s freeing for him and for us.”

The impact of programs like SOAR extends beyond the kids; it supports working parents, builds stronger families, and creates an inclusive community where everyone belongs. When we asked Michelle what SOAR meant to her family in a couple words, she put it simply, “LIFE SAVER!”
