Employees with disabilities make great assets to the workforce. Here are some tips for helping individuals with Autism or an intellectual/developmental disability feel welcome, included, and valuable in the workplace.
- Clearly define tasks.
- Communicate clearly and directly.
- Allow headphones at work if it’s safe to do so.
- Allow for breaks when needed.
- Allow for more time to complete a task.
- Make rules clear and concise and stick to them.
- Don’t make socializing mandatory.
- Define “unspoken” rules (ex: Don’t sit in Frank’s chair!)
- Give direct, but sensitive feedback.
- Rethink the hiring process to include everyone.
- Educate yourself and your workforce.
- Be an ally.
- Create a culture of acceptance.
- Be sensitive to sensory issues.
- Don’t speak in riddles. Say what you mean.
- Respect a person’s rituals and routines.
- Be open to change. Embrace change. Encourage change.
