Director of Recreation Services

Position Summary:

The Director of Recreation Services is responsible for the overall function of the Recreation program. This position is responsible for the annual budgeting process and assuring the budget is met. The Director is responsible for the overall leadership, quality, programs, financial needs, and coordinating activities throughout Recreation.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Plans, coordinates, and implements growth and expansion in accordance with the Strategic Plan. Leads any restructuring efforts.
  • Provides leadership and support to each individual program and facility within the scope of services provided.
  • Develops and implements strategies to increase efficiencies.
  • Ensures Recreation Services meets targets for outcomes as demonstrated through a regular evaluation and reporting process with participant input.
  • Interviews for management positions and oversees the employment of any leadership positions within Recreation programs.
  • Promotes quality supports and services.
  • Seeks out and meets with new potential clients.
  • Effectively communicates with all Service Coordinators at DMH and DDRB on a consistent and ongoing basis.
  • Maintains professional relationships with all funders as well as key contacts in the community.
  • Oversees program compliance with CARF, DMH, DDRB, and Medicaid Waiver Regulations.
  • Supports and promotes leadership within Recreation management.
  • Promotes and supports a team approach among all agency programs.
  • Monitors the financial viability of all Recreation programs.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed.
  • Completes and maintains all required trainings.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

Management/Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Direct and advise leadership within Recreation Services.
  • Responsible for performing leadership evaluations, providing leadership support, and responsible for oversight of employee discipline including terminations.
  • Develop, direct, and administer the annual budget.


  • Bachelor’s degree in social services or a related field required.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Two to three years’ management and/or supervisory experience is required.
  • Possess sound oral and written communication skills as well as decision-making skills.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with employees and management at all levels of the agency.
  • Possess the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Possess the ability to use Microsoft Office applications including, but not limited to Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Education, Experience, Skills:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Bachelor’s degree in social service or related field required.
  • Experience with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Possess sound oral and written communication skills as well as decision-making skills.
  • Possess good listening and comprehension skills.
  • Must be able to write and document in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
  • Must possess the ability to identify with and care for others.
  • Possess the ability to use Microsoft Office applications including, but not limited to Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to work as a team member.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Driver’s License

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

  • Light Work – Exerts up to 20lbs of force occasionally associated with moving objects. Standing, sitting, reaching, typing, and walking are common. Typical office setting.
