2016 Community Volunteer of the Year Award Honoree: Bob Davis

Bob Davis (Robert C. Davis) is the 2016 recipient of Community Living’s Community Volunteer of the Year Award.

Bob is from Carbondale, Ill., where he attended University High School. A self-professed faculty brat, his father was Dean of Students and a professor at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale, where Bob earned his degree with an emphasis in medieval Western African History.

Upon graduation in the spring of 1971, he was hired to be an insurance agent in St. Charles by Metropolitan Life. In July of 1972, he started his career — the Bob Davis Agency for American Family Insurance. On February 29, 43 years and 7 months later, Bob retired.

Having his own business gave Bob the opportunity to give back to his ‘adopted’ home town. Active in Kiwanis for over 30 years, he is a distinguished Past President and distinguished Past Lt. Governor. In addition to being a bingo caller for 10 years, (his major claim to fame) he chaired two golf tournaments a year for 30 years which benefited the youth in our community. He also served as Pancake Day co-chair for 20 years. He is Past President of the Boys and Girls Club of St. Charles County and currently serves on their board, among his other eleemosynary* endeavors.

He met his life partner, Mary Lou Briegel, in 1983, and they share her two children, Leslie Smith and her husband Jesse and Jeff Briegel and his partner Ria, as well as Mary Lou’s three grandsons.

Anyone who knows Bob has seen him tirelessly selling tickets to charity events, promoting sponsorships to businesses, soliciting contributions, encouraging volunteers and recruiting others to do the same. He is known for his ever present tag line when doing it all —
“it’s all for the kids.”
