Friday evening. It has been one of those weeks where there has been an evening meeting every night, multiple deadlines to meet, a couple staff issues to mediate, an unexpected crisis, a report is due and the copier is jammed! Or, whatever you would consider a really bad week – we have all had them! All I want to do is go home and crash in my favorite comfy chair and read or do nothing. But no, I had signed up weeks ago to help out with the Personal Enrichement Program’s dance, serving refreshments. Ugh…I’m tired and grouchy!
When I arrive at the venue, the joy and excitement of the crowd in anticipation of a fun night is evident and infectious. Smiles, hugs, high-fives…so great to see old friends and meet new ones. I am energized by just being there. It is truly magic! As a volunteer, I feel like I have a very small part to play in this event (although the refreshments are an important break in the non-stop dancing). Yet, what I have gotten in return is immeasurable – and unforgettable. I can’t wait to sign up for another volunteer opportunity.
Choosing to volunteer for Community Living may be a difficult decision…for the first time. After your first experience, it will never be a difficult decision to say “yes” again. What you give is so small in comparison to what you get in return.
What do you enjoy doing? What is your passion? What makes you happy/laugh? What do you want to know more about? What have you always wanted to try? There are so many opportunities available to volunteers! Sports – playing and spectating; theater – performing, directing, and watching; cooking; book club; music; art; decorating; gardening; assembling gift baskets; answering phones; camping…the sky’s the limit! Get to know what Community Living is about, feel good about helping others, learn something new, meet new friends, and laugh! Give volunteering a try and get ready to get back ten times more joy than you ever thought possible.
